Another of Ron’s hobbies was carpentry or should I say cabinet making. He made his mahogany display cabinets for his collection with their air tight drawers. The timber was acquired by purchasing old Victorian bedroom suites from auction rooms and taking them apart and machining the wood to size. His butterfly collection was housed in a thirty drawer cabinet and the moth collection in four twenty drawer cabinets surmounted by matching book cases.

In addition to his cabinet and furniture making I recall his toy making both for us children and to supplement his income by making Christmas toys for a local toy shop. I recall spending hours in his workshop watching him at work on his fret saw cutting out toy forts, dolls houses, farm yards and the many animals, furniture and people associated with them, which of course all had to be painted.

As well as these hobbies there was also tennis, which he played to a high standard. He was a member of Queens Park Lawn Tennis Club representing the club in the Brighton parks league. He also represented Brighton and Hove Parks in the County League and was successful in winning individual Championships within the Brighton League. Of course we were called upon to act as ball boys from time to time. I can recall watching him play in finals at a court surrounded by grandstands at Withdean Stadium. It no longer exists and the eastern goal mouth of the Seagulls (Brighton and Hove Albion) football pitch is where the court once stood.

Following his retirement he decided that another hobby should be added to his interests and he took up Philately in particular British Postal History and Thematic collections of butterflies, plants and birds. Naturally he was successful and won many medals in both local and national competitions.
