His perfection in gardening was also taken home and ball games were always ‘taboo’ for us as children. Grass was his particular pride and his front garden boasted Cumberland sea- washed bowling green turf, which in his latter years he still mowed with an old ‘ push’ bowling green mower to produce those familiar stripes
