Enquires of the Maddresfield Court Estate have established that no records of the gardeners on the estate are held as they were paid cash in hand by the head gardener. However there is an entry in the Ledger for the period 1862 - 1877 in January 1872 under Extra Labour for Dyson clearing wasps nests 9s. This sum was signed for by the Head Gardener Mr Cox.
The earliest recorded gardens at Madresfield Court are depicted on a survey by John
Doharty, 1739. This shows the moat and stews, and a formal walled garden with walks
and a central water feature south east of the house, near the present site of a tennis court.
An avenue of trees led to the Court from the site of the modern gatehouse. An engraving
of 1782 shows lawns around the house and trees beyond. Gravel paths leading to the
entrance through lawns and timber plantations were described in a guidebook of 1814
