During this time we had all joined the local church Scout and Guide Group I became a Wolf Cub , Scout, Senior Scout and finally a Rover Scout. I  thoroughly enjoyed my scouting and was fortunate to be selected to represent the Group at the Jubilee Jamboree celebrating 50 years of Scouting at Sutton Coldfield in 1957. The Scout Group also ran a Band and I started as a side drummer and progressed to being the Mace Bearer at the front of the parade. We gained a new Band Leader who taught us counter marching and displays and we began to perform at local fetes as well as leading Brighton Scout Parades on St George's and Remembrance Days. I remember on one occasion leading the parade down Ditchling Road I tossed the mace into the air and had to mark time, with the band catching me up,  to await its return as it got tangled in the overhead trolley bus lines! On another occasion I broke the cross off the top of it when I failed to catch it.
