Ron was in a reserved occupation and was not called up for active service. However his duties in the Parks Department had changed. At this time he was responsible for Dyke Road Park and playing fields became potato fields, and flower beds vegetable plots.

Ron and Dorcas had three children, I, Jeffrey Alan, was born on 10th September 1941, David Michael on 24 February 1945, and Barbara Dorcas Ann on 20th February 1949.
